Leadership and Community
-
As a WILA lead, Nneka has created and organized a seminar called EMPOWER (Educating and Mentoring Pharmacists to Optimize Willpower and Enhance Relationships) for the past three years. It was a small idea that has grown to impact hundreds of pharmacists and pharmacy students, and raised thousands of dollars for charities in need over the past 3 years.
In 2022, $5,000 was raised towards the North York Women's Shelter and last year $10,000 was raised towards the Native Women's Resource Centre of Toronto. This year, over 85 women pharmacists, pharmacy students and allies gathered together for a day of continuing education, leadership development, and wellness; all while being empowered to take charge of their lives. With the generous support of the Shoppers Drug Mart Foundation for Women's Health, various sponsors, and 100% of the registration proceeds, this event raised a record amount of $14,000 which was donated to the Women's Health in Women's Hands Community Health Centre in Toronto which aims to empower racialized women and improve their health outcomes.

BPPC was created to help address the underrepresentation of Blacks in the pharmacy profession and pharmacy leadership. Through this organization, she envisions a pharmacy profession with equitable representation of Black pharmacy professionals in pharmacy schools, practice, and leadership.
BPPC hopes to work with stakeholders, such as our members, pharmacy schools, regulatory authorities, and advocacy bodies, to minimize known barriers that Black pharmacy professionals experience. BPPC hopes to see improved care for members of the Black community by addressing healthcare disparities and contributing towards developing culturally competent pharmacists and other healthcare professionals to provide equitable, appropriate, inclusive care to the Black patient population.

Her leadership in this initiative was nothing short of transformative. She created an environment that fostered collaboration, growth, and empowerment for everyone involved. Her commitment to supporting women and amplifying their voices was not just inspiring but also deeply meaningful to me personally. She didn’t just lead the initiative, she embodied its purpose and mission, making every participant feel valued and motivated to achieve their goals.
